Happy Death Day 2U

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A funnier follow-up with a sci-fi bent, Happy Death Day 2U isn't as fiendishly fresh as its predecessor, but fans of the original may still find this a sequel worth celebrating.

Happy Death Day 2U | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) Happy Death Day 2U, more importantly, never loses sight of its secret weapon: Rothe, who rolls with every punch this film throws at her. This year it won’t make it anywhere near to my ten but I still recommend a watch, especially if you were a fan of the first. Frank H Yeah yeah I also gave the first one 5 stars, but I feel the average is way too low for these films. The first is better. The focus is clearer, but with sequels you either go; same movie again, or, bigger and bolder And boy howdy this is bigger and bolder, and with the same stellar lead (Jessica Rothe)I really appreciate the makers/cast of this movie trying their darnedest in the sequel. I really like the effects in the lab explosion scene. And we have the wonderful Jess jumping into a wood chipper with such a delightful face and outfit. 5 stars for effort, and the wonderfully charismatic Jessica Rothe. I'll also say that the remaining actors also do a great job too. The dialogue can be a bit corny, but corny and earnest is much much better than jaded and cynical -- which is more and more popular these days. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/21/24 Full Review Prabudhjeet A It's a good follow up but not upto as the first part, though humor is still intact Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Amanda H It's good the sequel to the original happy death day and was good but some down sides was that it definitely was more of a sci-fi then the original being a PG13 slasher but still overall like it escpeally when Tree gets back into the loop. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review Audience Member After the success of the last one yes they did make a follow-up but I do appreciate it immediately picks up where we left off. It's just as funny and suspenseful as the first movie. There’s actually more emphasis on the romance and the sci-fi angle this time around. It also still has plenty of plot twists to go with too which will please fans. Plus director Christopher Landon has given a scientific explanation as to why the loop occurred in the first place. The movie opens with Carter's roommate, Ryan waking up in his car and walking in on him and Tree. Later that night while working on his invention with his lab buddies the dean of the school takes it away believing it's a waste of school funds. A new Baby Face killer then stalks and kills him having him immediately wake up the next day like it never happened. Tree finds out he's trapped in a time loop after being killed just like she was and figures the only way to fix it is to stay together. Yet they subdue the killer and find out there's been a huge reprecussion. After failing to fix the problem immediately Tree is then thrust back into the loop from the original movie. But the thing is so many alterations have taken place. Key elements from her original timeline are not the same. Her relationship with Carter may also be on the rocks as they are not together as they usually are. It's up to her, Carter, Ryan and the other science students to input the correct algorithm in order to break the loop entirely. Yet Tree is having a hard time letting certain things slide. Maybe this a chance for her to have a better life than the one she had before when she was miserable and passive when we first saw her. It even dawns on her that if she can't fix the loop everyone dies for good and that would be too much blood on her hands. This movie is so much funnier than its predecessor throwing in so many more crazy kills for Tree to fix the scenario. They even increased the dramatic heft here as well making us question what we have and still wish we could have involving the day being reset. As mentioned before the romance element here is much more focused with Tree and Carter still having a somewhat connection to one another even if every day isnt the same for both of them. I gotta say too I was so shocked what the writers did to make the story go in more ways than one. Yes, it's overstuffed but still a crazy ride to be had. If we had the opportunity to have back what we lost in another life would we take it? Is it still our life even if we don't remember all of it? Is one life worth more than the other? If forced to choose what's worth losing more? The past is always pulling us back so how can we expect to have a better future? As scientists its up to them to solve the problem even if they created it in the first place. Taking a chance and a leap of faith is all it takes to be happy. Even if 'Happy Death Day 2U' doesn't surpass the last outing it's a welcome addition subverting horror conventions as well as the sci-fi genre. Lots more laughs to be had, too. That ending is pretty funny and satisfactory despite the script being overcrowded. I'm anxious if they'll do a part 3.
