With profound sadness, we share the news of the sudden unexpected passing of Thomas W. Gilmore, a devoted father, husband, son, brother and friend, on July 20, 2023.
Thomas was born on January 18, 1986, in the scenic city of Heilbronn, Germany. He spent his early years in Oklahoma where he resided with his mother, Teresa Golightly, and enjoyed the companionship of his siblings, Zach and Mikel. The next chapter of his journey took him to Ohio, where he came to live with his father, Eric Gilmore, and Eric’s then longtime partner, Pat Milburn. It was here that he formed deep ties to the community, marking the beginning of many lifelong friendships.
As a 2004 graduate of Claymont High School, Thomas was known for his competitive spirit and stood out as a distinguished athlete in baseball, football and wrestling. However, it wasn't just his prowess on the field or the mat that left a mark. Thomas often filled the hallways with his spontaneous song and dance performances, capturing the essence of his vibrant personality. His zest for life was truly infectious. With his unique charm and exuberance, Thomas had an uncanny ability to leave a lasting impression on all those fortunate enough to have known him.
After high school, Thomas boldly chose a path of service and valor by joining the United States Marine Corps. His unyielding courage led him to serve tours in the Middle East, including an impactful deployment on the USS Iwo Jima, from August 2008 to March 2009. Despite the rigors of service life, he showed his unwavering dedication and resilience time and again. During his deployment, Thomas served with distinction, undertook vital duties, and displayed exceptional dedication to his fellow service members.
In his personal life, Thomas was a devoted father and husband. His first marriage was to Katie Spangler (now Colaner) in April 2009, and they were blessed with a son, Bentley, in 2011. While this union did come to an end, they both continued to share in the joy of raising their son. Thomas later found love again with Alexx Mackey, whom he married on May 13, 2017. He welcomed her children, Julian and Jude, with open arms and a heart full of love.
Thomas harbored a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He could often be found fishing or simply exploring nature's wonder. His curiosity also extended beyond his immediate surroundings as he held a profound love for travel. The thrill of exploring unfamiliar landscapes and experiencing diverse cultures enriched his life and broadened his perspectives.
Among his various passions, Thomas held a deep affection for Cleveland sports, and the Cleveland Browns held a special place in his heart. Despite their often challenging seasons, his loyalty never wavered. This enduring devotion was a reflection of the steadfast commitment and loyalty that he demonstrated in all aspects of his life, most notably towards his family.
As we mourn the loss of Thomas, we remember the countless lives he touched throughout his various phases of life and during his many travels. He left a lasting impression on each person he encountered, shaping their lives with his warm spirit and unforgettable personality.

Thomas is survived by his loving wife, Alexx Mackey Gilmore. He leaves behind his cherished children: Bentley Gilmore, Julian Ball and Jude Berus. His memory will also be upheld by his mother, Teresa Golightly; his father, Eric (Lisa) Gilmore; his brother, Zach Gilmore; his sister, Mikel (Ryan) Hamilton; his non-biological brother, Doug (Charlene) Milburn; his grandfather, William Hobbs; and Alexx's grandmother, Karen Ryan, who loved Thomas like her own son. Thomas will also be missed by his numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
A memorial service will be held Monday, August 7, at 3 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. Military rites will be conducted immediately afterward outside the funeral home. There will be a brief time to gather and visit on Monday, 2 - 3 p.m. Family and friends are invited to the J-N-G Grill in New Philadelphia following the services to remember and celebrate Thomas.
